Intervention impacts for cattle and small ruminants in Ethiopia and Nigeria

Supporting Evidence Based Interventions (SEBI) is an initiative based at the University of Edinburgh, aiming to boost the livelihoods of smallholder farmers by delivering evidence-based technologies and interventions that offer sustainable solutions for livestock production. SEBI has a target that by 2020 interventions would be “on a trajectory” to reduce national ruminant livestock mortality rates by 10-15% in Ethiopia and Nigeria.  The aim of this project is to provide a framework for estimating the impact of interventions, evaluating their effectiveness, and determining the likelihood of their success (defined as achieving a 10% reduction in mortality from current levels). The results of this analysis show that this level of mortality reduction can be achieved, but only if the scale of the intervention can be expanded to very large, population-wide scales and if the impacts of these interventions can be sustained over a 10-year period.
